Decoding the camping code: Key campsite terminology
So, you've caught the camping bug and are ready to ditch the four walls for the starry expanse, but before you hitch up your chariot (or luxury motorhome), there's a secret language you need to crack: the jargon of the campground.
Our handy guide will have you navigating campsite pitches like a seasoned pro in no time.
Hardstanding
A gravel or solid-base to the pitch. We prefer these unless it’s the height of a very dry summer as there’s less risk of getting stuck in the mud.
Grass
A grass surface to park on - the classic campsite experience. Just remember, a wet summer can turn that idyllic patch into a muddy nightmare, so pack your wellies!
With Electric
No need to ration phone chargers or resort to candlelight with this perk. These will have ‘electric hook up’ so you can plug the motorhome into their power supply and run the electricity straight from the pitch. Some sites have a credit card point on the electricity point so you pay specifically for what you use, others include it in the price.
HWE
A hardstanding pitch with electric hook-up.
GWE
A grass pitch with electric hook up.
Serviced
This is the campsite equivalent of a luxury hotel room! Electricity and water hookups right by your pitch, often accompanied by a handy grey waste disposal point so you can drain your sinks and showers without worrying about overflowing puddles.
Motorhome Service Point (MSP or MHS)
This designated area lets you replenish your water tanks and dispose of those less glamorous elements of camping life – chemical toilet cassette waste (black water) and sink/shower water (grey water).
Bonus tip: Don't underestimate the power of campground staff. They're a wealth of local knowledge and can help you decipher any remaining campsite lingo. So, smile, ask questions, and embrace the adventure!
